My First Post: A Leap of Faith

I just finished watching Julie and Julia and was inspired to write my first blog post. I've had this blog for at least a year now and have yet to stop being afraid of writing this blog until now. You see, lately I have completely changed my life.

I graduated college in May, had a lot of interviews for Public Relations jobs, three that I was the runner-up for and finally just took the first job that I was offered; big mistake. You see, I am the type of person who is driven to get what I want and what I wanted was to be in Dallas, TX with my amazing fiancé Clint. So I moved from Oklahoma with a Bachelors degree to become an assistant at a sales company that my sister works for. I was underpaid and put up with a lot of things I should never have had to deal with, but it made me stronger and I learned a lot about customer service and human resources.

I got to work at 8 a.m. every morning and had a list of things to do on my desk, by 8:30 or 9 a.m. I was finished with my work and bored out of my mind. I tried to keep up with social media, but my boss didn't like me playing on the computer, which is understandable, but come on? I tried to keep myself busy by reading the company Web site, picking up around the office, asking if anyone needed some extra help, but I still wasn't being challenged or stimulated whatsoever. After about five months of pure headache I set a goal for myself to find a new job, this time in PR, by the end of the year.

I applied for numerous PR jobs in the Dallas area, none of which I had any luck in. My friend and mentor Lauren, @cubanaLAF on Twitter, told me to apply for an account coordinator at MorochPR. I don't have any agency experience, so I was offered an internship. I was really nervous about quitting my paid job, for a non-paid internship that was only half a day every day and I didn't have a part-time job. After asking Clint's and my parents' opinions and knowing that I'd have their support if I fell/fall flat on my face, I took the internship; I took a leap of faith.

I started my internship on November 30. I've already learned a lot of information and finally feel like I'm using my degree. I've met some awesome people and it's a great feeling to be around well-educated people who I can learn from daily. This was a really hard decision for me, but I'm excited to see what comes from this internship and how it will change my life for the better.
